not the end, just the begining of a new chapter

The year 2013, the month February, the location well, now in Belgrade. we had 2 good, well ok years out there we built the cabin, lived there and raised animals. but as few of you know that have lived this lifestyle it is time consuming and working past full time i didn't have the time for everything and delegated most of the daily chores to my wife and 3 kids which over time they got tired of and when weekends came and they were ready for a rest well i was ready for a full weekend of catching up at the homestead. after a few broken limbs from working in a cold icy environment the misses was kind of done and slowly the talk i overheard was being back in civilization. once i let it sink in that this wasn't going to work i gave in to the pressure and put the place up for sale. there was gold in the ground and 100 years ago the land was a patten ed gold mine and with the price of gold at 1600 an ounce i put it up as gold bearing land had a few interested parties but no one had any cash. finally i found someone who had investors and the price was agreed upon and we were looking for another place to buy. a few acres 2-3 would be great we had learned that 70 acres was a huge piece of land to take care of by ourselves. well no such luck so we moved into a small apartment, i know 70 acres to a tiny apartment in town was not my idea of life but we made do. and now at a few weeks over a year here i have adjusted ok. it is nice not driving 66 miles to my shop one way working all day then 66 miles home and trying to beat daylight getting things done. and we have started an indoor garden hydroponically so we have some fresh veggies herbs. oh yea didn't even get to grow much out at our homestead because the chickens not only devoured the bugs on the plants, they ate the whole thing it was kind of hard keeping 70 chickens out of the garden with any luck and the extreme hot dry days killed everything else.

11 months and counting

We have been off the grid 11 months....almost made it a year now, what a HUGE learning curve. On the other hand I just today ordered another pv panel due to the $1700.00 we have put away that used to go to the power company (Sorry NWE. but you suck) this will add to our own infrastructure and allow us to use less gas in the generator when we have extended days that are overcast. We have only used about 5 gallons in the last 2 months so it isn't much but it is still giving money to oil giants that have our country by the throat. Yes power can still be made on cloudy days it is much much less and another panel will help. ordered Geese today hopefully females so we can get some yummy goose eggs.

The waters frozen, Now what?

Hi all, I'm new to blog world but here goes.

we set out to go off grid on a small farm/ranch and this is our fiasco of it.

we have a, yes, one sheep. I did say small farm. 2 goats well for a few weeks more anyway, if he doesn't learn what the birds and the bees know pretty quick he will be on a train out of here, I want some fresh milk doggonit. 3 dogs and a slew of barn cats to keep the mice from carrying the misses off.
